These rules are in place to protect your rights as well as ours. By submitting photos to the Revolution of our Times Exhibition, you are deemed to have read and accepted all aspects of the rules described on this page. If you have any concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.
The Revolution of our Times (RooT) Exhibition, encompassing both the International Exhibition and the subsequent Photo Book is open to both amateur and professional photographers (‘Entrants’) aged 18 years and over (or of the age of majority in jurisdictions in their respective country), and from all over the world.
There is no cost for submission.
Each Entrant may submit up to 15 photos. Photos cannot be significantly altered, nor are compositions allowed. Basic cropping and dodge/burn are acceptable. When in doubt, we will request the raw file. If a raw file is not submitted within 3 business days of the request, we will disqualify your entry.
Submissions for the first cohort of photos will close on December 1, 2019 at 11:59PM HK standard time
Submissions for the second cohort of photos will close on February 23, 2020 at 11:59PM HK standard time
Photographers whose submissions are accepted are expected to actively promote the RooT exhibition, including:
- Following the Revolution of our Times Instagram and Facebook accounts
- Actively sharing RooT’s posts on your own social media accounts, including book sales, exhibition promotions and other photographer features
- Emails to your network, by request
If your photos are selected, we will need:
- Print ready file(s): .jpg, maximum quality, 300dpi, ProPhoto RGB color space
- Bio (560 characters max)
- High resolution headshot/Portrait
- Audio interview, scheduled at our mutual convenience
Your involvement as a contributing photographer is an integral part of our continued success.
Usage and rights
Your copyright and moral rights:
Revolution of our Times respects the rights of Entrants and does not claim copyright for the photographs submitted. Entrants retain full copyright in submitted photographs.
In addition, the moral rights of Entrants are respected. Whenever their work is published by Revolution of our Times (and partners) they will be credited. Failure to publish a credit due to error or oversight shall not be deemed a breach of this condition. Revolution of our Times will seek to correct any errors or oversights when notified.
By entering your submission, you (as an Entrant) warrant to Revolution of our Times that you created your entries, that you are the author of your work, you own all of the copyright in those entries, that it does not include trademarks, contract rights, or any other intellectual property rights of any other third person or entity and that the use by Revolution of our Times of the entries in accordance with these terms and conditions will not infringe any person’s intellectual property rights or other legal rights. You must not submit to the award any material that is or has ever been the subject of any threatened or actual legal proceedings or other similar complaint.
You will be responsible for any claim made by any third party in respect of your entry and agree to fully indemnify Revolution of our Times and its sponsors in respect of all royalties, fees and any other monies owing to any person or entity by reason of your breaching any of the foregoing. Revolution of our Times reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any entry that does not comply with any of the above, even after the entry is submitted on the website.
Use of works:
By entering the award, you agree that any work you submit may be used by Revolution of our Times (and partners) solely for purposes in connection with the Exhibition and Photo Book, and any successor website and no other purpose. These uses include:
- Judging the competition
- Displaying entries on the Revolution of our Times website and social media outlets, and those of its partners
- Displaying the entries at the gallery exhibitions
- Displaying the entries in the photo book, magazine or exhibition catalogue, or similar promotional exercises
- Using the entries on posters, postcards, adverts both online and offline to promote either the Exhibition or the Photo Book
- Cropping and re-sizing the work as necessary to fit predefined formats to promote the award and any related exhibitions
- Sub-licensing the entries to the press for reproduction in connection with the Exhibition and the Photo Book (the Entrant will be notified of such reproductions prior to publication)
- Inclusion within any materials promoting the Photo Book or any Exhibition organised by Revolution of our Times
You hereby grant Revolution of our Times a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence in each entry throughout the world in all media for the uses described above for five years following the date of announcement of your successful entry(ies).
You acknowledge your responsibility for protecting your entry against misuse by third parties, through means such as the embedding of metadata. Revolution of our Times (and its partners) can assume no responsibility and is not liable for any misuse of your work by third parties.
Any reproduction of entries outside of the uses listed above will occur only after receiving the Entrant’s express permission. The Entrant will be contacted and given the opportunity to negotiate any such usage with the parties concerned independently of the exhibition or photo book.
Revolution of our Times uses the social media platform Instagram. While Revolution of our Times guarantees that photographers will be fully credited when posting images on social media and through any of the other channels listed above, Revolution of our Times cannot guarantee that others who copy or repost images will do the same.
Entrants recognize that significant cost has and will continue to go into organizing and creating the Exhibition(s) and subsequent Photo Book.
Entrants will be compensated as follows:
- All prints sold via the RevolutionOfOurTimes.HK website: 40% of net profit (sale price minus expense of printing, framing and shipping)
- Exhibition, all original prints auctioned at exhibition: 40% of net profit (sale price minus expense of printing, framing and shipping)
- Photo Book, 40% of all net profit will be split amongst contributing photographers equally, paid annually
- Photographers will be compensated equally for each edition of the Revolution of Our Times Photo Book
All expenses related to exhibitions and the photo book may be be borne by Revolution of Our Times. If costs exceed our anticipated budget, we may opt to collectively pool resources (equally amongst chosen photographers) to publish both the exhibitions and photo book. Successful Entrants will have the option to withdraw their submission(s) if they do not agree to outlined expenses.
Revolution of our Times’s editors will screen entries and submit selected entries to the judge for his or her review. The judge will then select the shortlist based on the photographic skill, artistic sensibilities, emotion, impact and originality. The decisions of the judges are final.
Images submitted will be treated completely anonymously throughout the whole process to ensure total fairness. Each judge will have sole discretion of his or her selection and attempting to contact any judge directly in order to influence them will result in disqualification of the Entrant.
Revolution of our Times aims to announce the shortlist and winners for the exhibition and photo book by December 11, 2019. The shortlisted photographers will be notified by email and published on the Revolution of our Times website and associated social media.
If a competition Entrant does not meet the eligibility requirements or is subject to any entry restrictions, that Entrant shall not be entitled for inclusion in either the photo book or exhibitions, and will not be entitled to compensation in any circumstances.
Entrant’s photos should be sized under 2mb each and in .jpg or .png format. There are no specific naming conventions required for entry.
Photos should be no more than 2000 pixels along their longest edge. Image title and caption must be included in metadata along with copyright information.
Right to cancel
Revolution of our Times reserves the right to cancel or suspend the Exhibition or the Photo Book at its own discretion if not capable of continuing as planned for any reason that is beyond its control.
Modification of competition rules
Revolution of our Times reserves the right to change the competition rules. If this happens, all Entrants whom the changes affect will be notified by email.
Revolution of our Times will take no responsibility for the repercussions of any photograph submitted to the Exhibition and Photo Book, nor any problems incurred by the Entrants while participating in the Exhibition and/or Photo Book.
